EQUITY AND THE FUTURE OF BLACK EDUCATION

Attention workshop participants!
The Minnesota Humanities Center looks forward to your participation in the Cultural Competency: Equity and the Future of Black Education workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11-12, 2009 at Normandale Community College, 9700 France Avenue South, Bloomington, MN 55341. Check in for the workshop will begin on Tuesday, August 11 at 8 a.m. in the Fine Arts Atrium. The first session will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Auditorium.

Parking
Parking is available free of charge at Normandale. Participants are encouraged to park in South Lot 2 for easy entrance to the workshop. Enter building on the southwest corner at the Fine Arts entrance. Check in for the workshop will be right inside entrance in the Fine Arts Atrium. Signage will point you towards the auditorium, located in the Fine Arts Building.
Meals
Lunch and dinner are provided on the first day. The second day lunch and an afternoon snack are provided. Coffee and juice will be provided upon arrival both days.
Clock hours & graduate credit information
Participants attending all portions of the workshop are eligible for 16 clock hours. Clock hour certificates must be picked up by the end of the workshop. Graduate credit is available for an additional fee of $115 through Hamline University. For more information on graduate credit click here.

Please visit the resource room (Room C1022) during the workshop. A Minnesota Humanities Center staff person will walk you through our online resources, explain how to log on to view resources, and provide information about workshop follow up opportunities.
About the workshop
The Minnesota Humanities Center believes that the achievement gap can be bridged through the dedicated work of educators and administrators. For this reason, the Humanities Center, along with Normandale Community College and the University of Minnesota Department of African American and African Studies, is holding a two-day intensive workshop for Minnesota’s K-12 educators and school administrators titled “Cultural Competency: Equity and the Future of Black Education”.
This workshop will be unlike any other Minnesota has seen on the topic:
- It will address the achievement gap and strategies to bridge it in Minnesota's schools.
- A multitude of experts in education and cultural competency will pose questions about the responsibility of schools and districts to revolutionize educational approaches.
- Myriad topics will be touched upon through keynotes, breakout sessions, and town-hall style forums.
- Most importantly, the Humanities Center recognizes that there is not a “one and done” solution to the achievement gap. For this reason, the Humanities Center is committed to providing conversation, education, resources, and support on a continual basis to participants through additional workshops throughout the year, and through the use of an online learning community in which participants can share resources and experiences with workshop presenters, Humanities Center staff, and each other.
