This workshop will provide teachers with resources to teach the Grades 4-8 Minnesota Geography Standards that are specific to Minnesota.  Topics covered will include major physical and cultural features of Minnesota, the changing relationships between the patterns of settlement and land use in Minnesota, immigration, and agriculture.  This workshop will include an examination of the use and meaning of land from indigenous viewpoints.  Participants will have access to new resources, materials, and tools to help improve student learning in the classroom.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Dr. David A. Lanegran received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and is currently the John S. Holl Professor of Geography and Department Chair of the Department of Geography at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Lanegran has served on the National Council for Geographic Education, and as the chair of the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education since 1987. He was instrumental in writing the geography portions of the Minnesota Academic Standards. Dr. Lanegran has led more than ten professional development workshops with the Humanities Center and is one of the lead faculty for the Building America: Minnesota's Iron Range, U.S. Industrialization, and the Creation of a World Power week long workshop this summer. Michelle Leba is a geography teacher in Saint Paul at Washington Technology Magnet School. In November of 2009, she received the National Council for the Social Studies award for Outstanding Middle Level Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Read more about that award here

 
 
 
 
 
 
John Fraser Hart is Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota. His area of expertise focuses on rural and agricultural geography. He has published articles, book reviews and more than a dozen books, including the award-winning, The Land That Feeds Us (1992). Susy Svatek Ziegler is Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota. Her areas of expertise include biogeography, conservation biology, and physical systems of the environment. Robin Nelson, Ojibwe from White Earth, grew up north of Fond du Lac where hunting, fishing, and trapping were a part of her family's traditional way of life. After attending the University of Minnesota she worked in the Health Care industry for 25 years then changed careers by becoming Elementary Culture Advisor/Teacher for Anoka-Hennepin Indian Education, a position she held for 15 years. Retiring last year, Robin now works as a consultant creating Learning Trunks as a way to help teachers teach American Indian culture in a respectful way. She also leads teacher workshop on a number of topics including storytelling, literature, toys and games and art.
