Teaching authentically about American Indian cultures and traditions can be challenging for elementary school educators.  In this workshop, teachers will experience a number of traditional toys and games that American Indian children played---many of which are still played today.  Introducing these games in the elementary school classroom will help participants teach meaningfully about the cultural lives and lived experiences of the American Indian people.  This interactive workshop includes the re-creation of (and the playing with) some traditional Dakota or Ojibwe games.  Teachers who attend this workshop will explore lesson ideas and resources designed to teach elementary students about different American Indian cultures.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Robin Nelson, Ojibwe from White Earth, grew up north of Fond du Lac where hunting, fishing, and trapping were a part of her family's traditional way of life. After attending the University of Minnesota she worked in the Health Care industry for 25 years then changed careers by becoming Elementary Culture Advisor/Teacher for Anoka-Hennepin Indian Education, a position she held for 15 years.  Retiring last year, Robin now works as a consultant creating Learning Trunks as a way to help teachers teach Amierican Indian culture in a respectful way.  She also leads teacher workshp on a number of topics including storytelling, literature, toys and games and art.
