For the last 20 years, the Minnesota Humanities Center has increased the learning potential of students throughout the state through unique professional development training for educators. The Center works in partnerships with schools, districts, foundations, and other organizations to increase the academic achievement of students statewide.
Recently the Humanities Center made a conscious decision to focus its extensive experience providing professional development and resources for educators to combat possibly the biggest problem facing students in Minnesota today:
The achievement gap between traditionally
underserved students and their classmates.
Through humanities-centered, cultural competency training and integration of fresh cultural content into schools' existing curriculum, educators will increase the academic achievement of these underserved students, and provide a more authentic and complete learning experience for all. Implementation of this work is through committed, relationship-driven training for educators available in a variety of platforms, including in-person training and through the Minnesota Humanities Center's new on-line training medium.
This work leverages ongoing partnerships with Saint Paul Public Schools, Minneapolis Public and Charter Schools, and with schools in Omaha, Nebraska, whose student populations are primarily students of color, through support from an Omaha-based foundation.
